A.Prof. Mackay has 20+ years’ experience discovering and diagnosing viral pathogens in the field of respiratory and molecular virology and leads his own research group seeking to identify and characterise respiratory viruses and decrypt their roles in human disease. Since 1992 he has designed and conducted numerous investigations using PCR-based methods to support clinical diagnoses and discover and characterize new viruses found in the respiratory tract. During this time A.Prof. Mackay has established many collaborative partnerships with clinicians and scientists, both locally and internationally. In the 10 years since completing his PhD in 2003, A.Prof Mackay has been awarded 5 grants and he has 6 publications ranked by Essential Science Indicators in the top 1% of their fields of Microbiology and Clinical Medicine, several of Journal of Clinical Virology’s highest cited papers in the past decade and his HRV review in Reviews in Medical Virology was among the journal top 10 downloads for 2010. He has 9 papers with >100 citations and has averaged 401 citations per year for the past 7 years (2006-2012). During his career he has focussed on generating novel data and producing highly regarded publications in leading journals and is now considered a leader in the field of respiratory virology with a focus on rhinoviruses. He is Associate Editor for Journal of Clinical Virology and an Editorial Board Member for Viruses and the World J Virol. He regularly reviews for leading journals including Nat Med, Emerg Infect Dis, J of Clin Virol, J of Med Virol, Clin Chem, J Clin Microbiol, Nuc Acids Res, Clin Infect Dis, J Infect Dis, and he accepts 20-40 requests per annum). A.Prof Mackay also reviews applications to national funding bodies (ARC, NHMRC) and international health research agencies (Austria, Hong Kong and New Zealand). He would love to collaborate!
