Douglas Rosenthal was born 1965 in Cleveland, Ohio, where he finished elementary school and high school. In the 1986 Rosenthal enrolled in Biology studies at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He graduated in October 1990 and earned a bachelor's degree in biology. Rosenthal received the plaque from the Case Western Reserve University of Cleveland for the best student in the field of natural sciences, for the 1990 school year.

At the postgraduate studies in the field of stem cells, Rosenthal enrolled in the 1991 at the Faculty of Biology, Case Western Reserve University. He defended his master's thesis entitled: "Human embryonic stem cell" and obtained the title of Master of Biological Sciences. Rosenthal received his PhD in Biology at the Faculty of Science Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
