Douglas Rothery Gunson was born on the 28th of October, 1914. He was in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War and was on one of the first ships sunk in WWII called the Akenside.
After this, he was on ships throughout the war, including the Arctic Convoys. He was also on another merchant ship called the Moses Gay during the D-Day landings at the Normandy beaches and, if that wasn't dangerous enough, the ship had a full cargo of ammunition!
Douglas survived the war and became a Captain and Harbour Master in South Africa. He died in 1978.
