NBEP began conversations with Brown University about atmospheric deposition after the completion of 2017’s State of Narragansett Bay and Its Watershed. The NBEP published the information available at the time on atmospheric deposition inside the Nutrient Loading chapter, with the hope that values would be updated in the future.

This report presents the results of recent (2017-2020) atmospheric nitrogen deposition research conducted by Meredith Hastings and her laboratory group in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences and the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society at Brown University. Material from the following peer-reviewed publications is included in this report:

• Joyce, E., Walters, W., Le Roy, E., Clark, S., Schiebel, H., Hastings, M.G. 2020 Highly concentrated nitrogen atmospheric deposition in an urban, coastal region in the United States Environmental Research Communications, 2(8). 081001
• Balint, S.J., Joyce, E., Pennino, S., Oczkowski, A., McKinney, R., Hastings, M.G. in review. Identifying sources and impacts of precipitation-derived nitrogen in Narragansett Bay, RI, Submitted to Estuaries and Coasts.
• Joyce, E., Balint, S., Walters, W., Heikes, B., Hastings, M.G. in prep. Quantifying dry deposition of ammonia/ammonium and the bi-directional flux of ammonia to Narragansett Bay, in preparation (to be submitted in Fall 2021).

The purpose of this report is to inform our audience on changes in atmospheric deposition, stimulate discussion among partners and nutrient experts, and to identify areas for further research. The audience for this piece is anyone who is interested in atmospheric deposition, particularly environmental managers, researchers, and the interested public.
