The animation explains our rapid evidence support for local government. Our rapid response programme helps local officers use research in their policy, practice and decision making.

Our rapid projects are 3-6 months long and this is what you can expect.

  • First, we start up by establishing a connection with the key people in a local authority. We discuss the topic of interest, the local area and the evidence need.
  • Second, we look more closely at the issue which may be, for example, mental health, housing or air quality and search NIHR evidence that addresses that issue. Working in collaboration with local authorities, we learn more about their population, priorities and challenges. This gives us a better understanding of a place and how we can help.
  • Third, the KNOW-PH team go away and search, sift and select evidence. We provide support such as informative maps, videos, summaries and interactive digital outputs, depending on the project. An evidence board looks like this https://view.genially.com/664db7c7b45b790013378e50
  • Fourth, once local users have looked at the summary evidence, KNOW-PH come to the local area to engage in a deep dive face to face workshop. This is where we work together to make sense of the evidence using design methods. Importantly, we bring research findings together with local knowledge.
  • Finally, we write up the workshop and hand over the final phase to the decision makers. This can be used for some of the outputs of local government such as strategies, plans, health impact assessment, practice guidance, job descriptions or commissioning services.
