Design & Oral Health
This seminar explored the intersection of Design (as a discipline of study, research and practice) with Oral Health, and Health Research. Several case studies were shared, followed by a structured discussion that explore how design might contribute to addressing deeply entrenched challenges within the field of Oral Health.
The conversation related to the WHO Global Oral Health Action Plan, which was based on their definition of oral health as the biggest global health burden affecting almost half of the world’s population. Yet also something that is not really talked about, acted upon or considered seriously in national policies. The 6th action in this action plan is:
Engage with civil society: Ensure participation of civil society organizations and empowerment of the community in planning, implementation and monitoring of appropriate programmes by providing platforms for engagement. Involve national oral health, medical and public health associations and community-based organizations in policy and guideline development and implementation.
In this seminar and the subsequent White Paper currently being drafted, we have connected this action with the potential strategic role that design might play.
