Correlations between different stages of neurogenesis emerge after learning

Adult male Long Evans rats were trained in the spatial water maze (8 trials/day for 6 days; as in Snyder et al. 2005) and sacrificed 5 weeks post-training. Proliferating cells and immature neurons in the dentate gyrus were detected via immunostaining for the endogenous markers Ki67 and doublecortin. a) Water maze training did not affect the overall densities of adult-born cells. b) In cage controls there was no correlation between densities of proliferating cells and immature neurons. However, after water maze training, a significant correlation was observed (r = 0.83, p < 0.05).
