Sūrpāraka was the principal city of Śroṇāparāntaka. Śroṇāparāntaka was corrupted by later writers to Sunāparānta, to mean ‘golden aparānta’; ‘śroṇa’ in Saṁskṛta means ‘rice gruel’ (Konkani = pez). [Monier Williams, 1988 : Sanskrit Dictionary] Śroṇāparāntaka then would roughly translate as ‘the western end of the land, where rice gruel is eaten’. In no way it means Suvarṇāparānta.
