Made 2 Resonate (M2R), 6th December 2014

M2R premiered with the single performance 'Hanging in the Balance' in London on 6th December 2014. The premiere led to a suite of performances which followed in 2016 (Songs of Coiled Light) and 2017 (Fallen Angel):

The rationale for the research was to investigate how new musical compositions can:

1. Develop ways for audiences to listen, both those with hearing impairment and full hearing
2. Approach musical composition in new ways, drawing on those with hearing impairments
3. Create three pieces of innovative music which explore resonance in different ways
4. Develop software which enhances the interface and productivity of the musical engagement
5. Create flexible versions of music which can function in variable contexts
6. Challenge artistic practice and connect to listeners beyond the concert hall

Using the experience of aural impairment as a starting point means that the music reveals itself in both visual and audio terms which engages the audience in new ways. The research adopts a synergised approach in which composition, design and computer manipulation are equally weighted. It combines the world of concert music with art installation, opening up the potential impact to a larger artistic community. The audience groups’ engagement with the senses of feeling and seeing was synergised in new ways with that of hearing. The work demonstrated new possibilities for creating music for those with hearing impairment.
