This dataset supplements the publication “Kinematic and rheological controls on rift-related fault evolution“ by Pan, Naliboff, Bell and Jackson. We include five 3D numerical simulations of continental extension developed using open-source, mantle convection and lithospheric dynamics code ASPECT, in addition to test models referenced in the manuscript, and python scripts to automatically extract the fault population.

Overall, the supporting files contain all the necessary parameter files and additional inputs required to reproduce the results of our publication. Here we provide a brief breakdown of what each file contains:

  • ‘Models’ contain the ASPECT parameter file for each simulation, and the model output at 5 km depth, which has been interpolated as numpy files for each timestep.
  • ‘Scripts’ contain the python scripts used to generate fault extraction results. The main script ‘fault_extraction_analysis_2D.py’ is ran, and an excel table is output (specify certain output parameters in input.py). Overall one excel file is output per tilmestep - these can be collated together using the script ‘results_concat.py’. They can also be converted to strain-time data using ‘results_to_strain_time.py’
  • ‘Extracted fault statistics’ contain all the outputs for each model.
