Lee devised the storyline for The Stay using ‘the principle of creative limitation’ (McKee, R. 1997) of one location, one actor, and one weekend in which to shoot. He wrote the script as a single location live action narrative short film in the 'folk horror' genre. Lee's previous films On Edge, Red Lines and Panic Button all featured dialogue; The Stay, however, is an almost silent movie, with a single line only which is mirrored at the climax. This has helped the film to find audiences around the world as it becomes universally relatable, purely visual storytelling, transcending spoken language.
Synopsis:
A young woman (Daniela Finley) checks into a holiday cottage and discovers that some vacations will stay with you. Forever.
