Caoineadh, premiered by the London Sinfonietta in the Warehouse, 22 March 2018

Caoineadh is a work for flute, clarinet, piano, violin and cello and was commissioned by the London Ear Festival for the London Sinfonietta. The instrumentation specified in the commission was the mixed ensemble established by Schoenberg in his Pierrot Lunaire, an instrumentation that became ubiquitous in the new music of the mid- to late-20th century. Fox's intention was to develop a timbral re-composition of the ensemble, fusing this heterogenous group of instruments.

The piece is a memorial for Bob Gilmore (hence the Irish title, which in his accent would be pronounced ‘keener’) and it is deliberately modelled on aspects of the music of Claude Vivier, subject of much of Bob’s scholarship.
