Data sets comprising:
1) baseline movement symmetry data of N=30 Quarter horses. Baseline data are from straight-line, in0hand trotups on reining purpose arena surface and from left and right rein lunge exercise on the same surface..
2) normalized movement symmetry data from in-hand, lunge and ridden exercise of the same N=30 horses for which baseline symmetry data are available. Movement symmetry data are normalized (for each parameter separately) so that a) a positive value for movement symmetry is observed for straight-line, in-hand exercise and b) left and right reins are recategorized with respect to the direction of asymmetry seen during the baseline, straight-line, in-hand exercise, such that an 'inside rein' is when the horse is trotting with the limb on the inside of the circle and the corresponding asymmetry parameter indicates a reduction in force production during the stance phase of said limb during the baseline trot.
Movement symmetry parameters are:in mm
HDmin, HDmax, HDup for vertical head movement
WDmin, WDmax, WDup for vertical withers movement
PDmin, PDmax, PDup for vertical mid-pelvic movement.
Parameters labelled 'min' indicate the differences between the two minima in vertical movement over a stride cycle.
Labelled with 'max': differences between the maxima.
Labelled with 'up': differences between the upward movement amplitudes.
Sign convention before normalization: asymmetries indicating a reduction in force with the left limb have negative values, indicating a reduction in force with the right limb have positive values.
Data are labelled with respect to the horse (ID), the Gait (trot), the Surface (Soft), whether the values was taken during in-hand or ridden exercise, the rein (either straight, left, right or straight, inside, outside), the numbers of strides averaged to calculate the value (N), the average stride time (in ms).
