The McGurk illusion: A default mechanism of the auditory system

Published on by Zunaira Iqbal

A study looking at how the McGurk illusion arises from a default mechanism within the auditory system. We had two tasks. The first being a classic audiovisual McGurk task where individuals listened to auditory-/ba/ paired with visual-/ga/ and judged what they perceived. The second task was auditory-only, where participants were presented with words and pseudowords that had missing phonemes; their task was to type out what they heard.
