GUARDIAN Vital Sign Data

Motivation
In intensive and palliative care, vital parameters such as the respiratory rate and the heart rate are particularly important for the detection of crisis situations. The currently used cable-bound electrodes and sensors are often susceptible to interference and severely restrict the patient's mobility. The project therefore aims to increase the quality of life of patients in care and to improve the prognosis and prevention of crises.
Objectives and procedures
The project aims to use multimodal, electromagnetic high-frequency sensor technology to enable contactless monitoring of respiration and heart activity from a distance of several meters, so that in future patients will be surrounded by fewer cables. For precise measurements, six-port interferometry technology will be used for the first time. Based on automated evaluations, the information is made available to medical and nursing staff. At the same time, documentation is made easier by the optional feed into the hospital information system (HIS).

Innovations and perspectives
By using six-port interferometry, all body movements are recorded contactlessly with a previously unattained distance resolution in the micrometer range and breathing and heartbeat are extracted. The consortium partners see a high potential in the technology to be developed for monitoring vital parameters of patients in hospitals and nursing homes, and in the future also in the outpatient and home care sector.
