In this episode of figshare new features, I’ll be talking about some new functionality that has just been launched alongside a retooling of an existing feature.
First up, we’re pleased to say we’ve launched a highly requested new feature, the ability to send a link to a collaborator or viewer of private and/or draft articles.
You can do this at any time, with existing articles or new uploads. Starting in My data, click to edit the article and enter the metadata screen:
At the bottom and to the left of the screen you’ll see a new option, “Get DOI or Private Link”.
Click here will take you to the private article preview page, where underneath your preview viewer will be:
A small aside before continuing, this brings us neatly to our revamped DOI process. Your reserved DOI is right there in the box, simply copy and paste. Please note, this DOI is NOT active yet, and will only function once your article is made live, regardless of whether a private sharing link is generated. This feature is extremely handy for when you need a DOI in advance but you can’t put the data live just yet e.g. for a publication.
If you now click on “Generate private sharing link” and you’ll automatically be generated a unique link the will grant anybody with this link access to your private article so be careful who you share it with:
It’s very easy to disable the link as shown above. If you wish to generate another link, simply disable the link and click again on “Generate private sharing link” for a new, unique URL.
Take note, authors do not appear on this private sharing link to the person viewing the article, making this perfect for peer review.
See below for a video walkthrough of this new functionality.
As always, feedback, comments, suggestions and ideas are welcomed. Please get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org or via twitter, facebook or google+.
