I have been developing improved approaches to the governance of environmental risks since 1987. My contributions seek to reconcile society's unease about pollution with organisational responsibilities for its reduction and safe management in the long-term, with improved outcomes for public and environmental health. My scholarship has been to the practice of environmental engineering, risk management, policy analysis and corporate governance. Recent papers examine organisational competencies in risk management, especially within the international water sector as it responds to calls for sustained service levels under constrained access to finance, climate change and water scarcity. Risk assessment and management has been a formal part of the environmental engineering curriculum since the late 1980's, and good risk governance not only makes organisations, systems and communities resilient, it also creates lasting business value.
