Professor Mihajlo (Michael) Jakovljevic MD, PhD, MAE is a Top-Notch expert in the Economics of Global Health. This is witnessed with 20 years long track record of service on behalf of various UN bodies and leading multilateral agencies such as UNESCO, WHO, GBD Project, European Commission, SNSF, JSPS etc. His primary focus of interest remains on health financing and affordability issues in the Global South's LMICs countries and the Emerging Markets. Being a professional health economist and a clinical pharmacology physician, his work is largely applicable to the sustainable healthcare investment from the perspective of governing authorities, pharmaceutical / medical device industry. The most impactful expertise, documented with hands-on personal experience he holds on the following countries and regions: Western Pacific (Japan, mainland China, South Korea); South Asia (India, Nepal, Sri Lanka); Middle East (Arabic Gulf countries, Israel, Iran); Eastern Europe (Serbia, Russian Federation, Greece); Western Europe (UK, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Netherlands, Ireland) Sub-Saharan Africa *(Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa); North America (USA); Latin America (Brazil, Mexico, Chile) *(In most of such cases traveling internationally for the purpose of field work).

As of 2018, by the decision of WHO Director Regional, he was appointed top-tier EACHR Committee Member with WHO Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen, Denmark. Since 2019 he continues to serve as Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious Cost Effectiveness and Resource Allocation journal owned by BMC, Springer Nature, London, UK. In 2021 he was elected UNESCO – TWAS Ordinary Fellow in the leading UN forum for Sustainable Development of the Global South. Academia Europaea, London, UK elected him 2022 as the first national representative to the Section Clinical and Veterinary Medicine comprised of almost 800 members from all of the European continent.

He published almost 400 full-length papers in refereed journals (Cumulative Impact Factor 5,640+; app. 136,000+ citations, Hirsch factor 91, I-10 index 238, as of January 2025). So far he was holding Visiting / Affiliated positions at Hosei University Tokyo, (Institute for Comparative Economic Studies / Japanese National Center for Population Aging); CHTF IHME University of Washington, USA; Health Economics Department, Lund University, Sweden; Vienna Medical University, Austria, Ghent University, Belgium etc.

He is frequent speaker in the field, across Europe, Middle East and Far East Asia. His scholarly work appeared in Globalization and Health, Health Economics, Cost Effectiveness and Resource Allocation, European Journal of Health Economics, Value in Health, Frontiers in Public Health - Health Economics, Expert Reviews in Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research, Journal of Medical Economics and top ranked clinical journals. He is a member of IHEA, ISPOR, EuroCRIS, Japanese HEA; ISPOR Japan and ESBRA, ASPHER etc.

During his mandate 2016 - 2021 in the capacity of Specialty Chief Co-Editor with Professor Seiritsu Ogura, Tokyo, Japan he founded permanent section Frontiers in Health Economics within its high impact mother journal Frontiers in Public Health based in Lausanne, Switzerland. For his deeds and professional standing, in spring 2015 he was the only ever nominated candidate for IHEA *(International Health Economics Association) Board of Directors Elections, based in Eastern Europe.

Since 2016, Michael serves at the Academy of Medical Sciences Belgrade (established 1976) of The Serbian Medical Society (established 1872) being the youngest member ever elected in the history of the Academy. In his native Serbia at his Alma Mater, as a Founding Head in 2016 he established Department of Global Health Economic and Policy, first of its kind at large state owned universities of the Balkans. A decade ago in 2014 he published as the Editor-in-Chief the pioneering Health Economics university textbook in the region of former Yugoslavia, written in the local languages. Over the past two decades, he has been a Principal Investigator and Grant holder of the largest budget-financed health economics grant in Serbia (OI175014; budget app. 700,000 EUR; 2011‒2023; Leading a Team of 18 researchers of diverse career maturity).
