Christine Stortini

Biologist (Biological sciences)

I am a recent doctoral graduate from Queen's University, Canada. My PhD thesis was concerned with the application of the Theory of Island Biogeography to large marine ecosystems. I found that variation in the slope of the species-area relationship across "island-like" habitats (specifically offshore banks) reflected temporal changes in predator abundance and interspecific variation in motility/dispersal capacity. My previous work (related to my masters degree and various contracts) involved the evaluation of species vulnerability and distributional response to projected local climate change, the inclusion of climate change considerations in Marine Protected Area planning, and the protection of endangered species. I work largely with R Statistical and ArcGIS, and the majority of my work has developed from the data recorded during the annual ecosystems surveys of the Scotian Shelf, Canada.
