CHRISTOPHER MEAD

Associate Professor, Head of Theatre (Creative arts and writing)

Chris Mead, most recently the Literary Director of Melbourne Theatre Company, works regularly as a director and dramaturg both nationally and internationally. He was a guest in 2019 at Canada’s Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity Writers’ Lab, was also a judge for Yale’s esteemed Windham-Campbell Award in 2015-16 and directed a new play with five emerging writers for MONA Foma and Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart in 2023 . He was the inaugural artistic director of PlayWriting Australia, the Literary Manager of Sydney Theatre Company, also producing its Wharf 2LOUD art-form development programme, Literary Manager of Belvoir Street Theatre, Curator of the Australian National Playwrights’ Conference and the Senior Reader for Griffin Theatre Company. Chris has recently completed 'Wondrous Strange' (Currency Press) on the writing of new plays. Chris’s Platform Paper on institutional racism and outreach strategies, 'What is an Australian play?', was published by Currency House in 2008.
