PhD Thesis on the observation of polar ice using earth observation satellites.
To explore the vulnerability of polar ice to such climate change scenarios, the current
thesis covers a wide range of studies on polar ice processes which are important from the climatological viewpoint. The utility of microwave remote sensing techniques to study these important processes and to study the impact of global climate change on Polar Regions and viceversa are demonstrated. Polar Regions are areas which are not easily accessible. Studies of sea ice have received a boost after the advent of satellite remote sensing. Early remote sensing of sea ice used visible and infra-red sensors. The observations made by these sensors were limited to cloud-free and well-illuminated conditions. Polar Regions are the regions that remain dark for several months and are frequently cloudy; this condition necessitated the use of microwave sensors in the remote sensing of Polar Regions. Because of their all-weather, day and night surveillance capability, the microwave sensors have been found very useful in the polar studies. Data from both passive and active microwave sensors have been extensively employed in this current research work.
