In this talk we present an approach to make use of PETSc data objects and linear algebra routines/interfaces to speed up the numerics of the time integration process in a legacy simulation code. Special emphasis is put on keeping the proprietary modeling part of the code separated from the numerical tools, both logically and on the level of software development. This is accomplished by utilizing MPI not only for the parallel execution of PETSc-related code but also for an interprocess communication between the legacy code and the numerical toolkit.
