Roda Sst exercise

online resource
posted on 2020-04-27, 22:10 authored by Gary HampsonGary Hampson, Lidia Lonergan, Allard Martinius
This item consists of materials for a short (one-day) virtual / remote fieldtrip to the Roda Sandstone, Tremp-Graus Basin, Spanish Pyrenees. This unit is widely visited by geological fieldtrips with an interest in sedimentology, stratigraphy, and reservoir analogues for hydrocarbon production and CO2 storage. Material was assembled by Gary Hampson and Lidia Lonergan (Imperial College London), and leans heavily on previous fieldtrip material compiled by, and discussions with, Allard Martinius (Technical University of Delft / Equinor).

The material presents a tour of five outcrop localities (c. 4-5 hours) followed by a subsurface correlation exercise between three wells in the analogous hydrocarbon reservoir of the Troll Field (c. 2-3 hours). The exercise builds on outcrop observations. In combination, this material is intended as a demonstration of how a virtual / remote fieldtrip can be run, and was assembled for such a fieldtrip (by the 2019-20 Petroleum Geoscience MSc class, Imperial College London) in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The contents include:
- a fieldguide including an exercise (.docx format)
- accompanying presentation material (.pptx format)
- two high-resolution photopanoramas (.pdf format)
- five narrated videos that introduce the field localities (.mp4 format)

The videos were pre-recorded from the presentation material to introduce each locality on the fieldtrip, prior to small-group work sketching and interpreting photopanoramas and/or related group discussions. They are included here to give an idea of potential remote teaching style - it is quick to record similar narrated videos that are tailored to your own specific audience (although you are welcome to use these videos if you consider them to be fit for your purpose: bear in mind that each of these videos was recorded in one take in time-limited circumstances!).

There is a sixth video that presents a solution to the well-correlation panel. This video is available to fieldtrip leaders and teachers on request - please email Gary Hampson (g.j.hampson@imperial.ac.uk) for a copy. Feedback is also welcome, to the same email address.
