In 2019, WWF and partners conducted social monitoring on aspects of marine resource governance in Wakatobi National Park using focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Aspects of governance examined focused on key principles of self-governance, such as monitoring and enforcement, conflict resolution, and participation in decision-making. The monitoring showcases communities’ reliance on the Park for marine resources and explores resource use and local and customary rules associated with natural resource governance. Several recommendations were made as a result related to improving stakeholder participation, more effectively enforcing rules, and addressing perceptions of limited marine resource access.
