Research Statement

BACKGROUND Yawuru descendent Robert Andrew’s artwork Presence II was featured in Dhagun at La Boite for their program Block Party. Dhagun is a yearlong outdoor exhibition integrating First Nations voices responding to Country. Dhagun is a yuggera language word meaning earth, place or country. This exhibition series was curated by Blaklash. Presence II is a video artwork that overlays mineral and pigment details from Andrew’s installations to visualise his evolving relationship to Country. This artwork was presented as a large-scale projection on the side of the La Boite building. CONTRIBUTION This yearlong program at La Boite brought together First Nations artists whose work articulates their relationship to Country. Presence II overlays and abstracts elements from Andrew’s installations to communicate his evolving relationship to Country. While the mechanical elements he uses are precise and programmed, Andrew’s work builds new landscapes from the interactions between earth pigments, water, ochres, rocks, and technology. The constant layering and building of footage with each iteration of Presence extracts Andrew’s growing knowledge of Yawuru Language and culture into layered stratums. SIGNIFICANCE La Boite is a leading theatre in Brisbane that often supports the practices of visual artists through their program. Blaklash is a local curatorial and consulting organisation that bolsters and hosts dynamic conversations focused on First Nations artists and concerns. Presence II is second iteration in a series of video works. The production of this artwork built the foundation for Presence III which was exhibited as part of Data Imaginary Griffith University Art Museum 2021. Another iteration Presence—within an utterance was featured in Andrew’s solo Within an utterance at Museum of Old and New Art (2022).
