Inflammatory bowel disease refers to a group of inflammatory conditions which primarily affect the colon and small intestine, although the entire GI tract can be involved. It includes ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and indeterminate colitis
They are identified and diagnosed by the appearance of a set of clinical, endoscopic, and histologic characteristics. However, no every inflammatory conditions of the GI tract is idiopathic and several aspects can help fora accurate evaluation, namely: specific anatomical distribution, inflammatory changes with no architectural disorder (mostly active or mostly interstitial processes) multifocal ulcerations, and chronic intraepithelial lesions.
