Electronic Supplementary Material (ESM): For those unfamiliar with the unusual anatomy of shipworms, we provide a brief description and comparison to more typical bivalves. Additionally this supplement includes information describing the amino acid sequences used to make synthetic peptides for antibody generation (Figure S1), Western immunoblots demonstrating the immunoreactivity of the anti-GH5 and -GH6 antibodies against (i) their respective peptide antigens (Figure S2), (ii) protein extracts of shipworm tissues (Figure S3), and (iii) protein extracts from culture supernatants of the symbionts Teredinibacter waterburyi Bs02 and Teredinibacter purpureus Bs12 (Figure S4), as well as control images corresponding to Figures 2-8 in the main text (Figures S5-10). The latter include side-by-side comparisons of sections stained with anti-GH5 and anti-GH6 antibodies, pre-immune serum controls and no-antibody controls.
