The network is comprised of six cell layers. The top two consist of cortical PY and IN neurons. The middle two layers are thalamic TC and RE neurons for fast spindle generation, and the bottom two thalamic TC and RE neuron layers generate slow spindles. The cortical PY cells layer contains 200 neurons, all other layers contain 40 neurons. Small green-filled circles symbolize GABAARs or GABAARs+ GABABRs, and corresponding connections. Red arrowheads represent correspondingly AMPARs or AMPARs+ NMDARs receptors.
