Fig 4, Synteny Analysis run on Atlantic Salmon, Brown Trout and Blue Tilapia using ENSEMBL "Region in detail" function.

Atlantic salmon is an anadromous fish while Brown Trout and Blue Tilapia are both freshwater fish. Given this we would have expected brown trout and blue tilapia to be surrounded by more of the same genes however the opposite was found, brown trout and Atlantic salmon had more genes in common surrounding the NOD1 gene (highlighted in blue) than Brown Trout and Blue Tilapia. This indicates that Brown Trout and Atlantic Salmon are more closely related Syntenic Homologs than BrownTrout and Blue Tilapia.

The confirmation that the NOD1 of different telost fish species reflect the gene tree rather than habitat similarities allows us to look into how these differences arise in clades of the gene tree that include fish from a combination of the habitats we looked at.
