The design system for collaborative learning presents an evidence-based approach to teaching. The phases are Curated Resources, Coached Active Retrieval Experience, Collaborative Learning and Connection and Reflection. While the phases are presented sequentially in the graphic, they do not have a single sequence and should be adjusted as required for the topic or context.

The framework can be used in face-to-face teaching, blended learning, or fully online. This framework can be used with all learners - early learners (children from 0-5 years old), within the formal school system (K-12), in Higher Education, Vocational Education or in a Professional Development context.

The approaches used in the Design System for Collaborative Learning, while inspired by Science and STEM, are applicable across disciplines (language acquisition, language arts, HASS, social sciences, business, law, government and more).
