Spectral indices were obtained from data acquired by the MODIS instrument aboard the NASA’s terra satellites. The MOD13Q1 product includes the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI).
Precipitation and temperature were derived from PRISM (Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes). PRISM is an analytical climate model that generates spatial grids with 4 km resolution of temperature and precipitation estimates.
Land cover was obtained from the National Land Cover Database (NLCD Table 1). The product consists of 20 fuzzy categories representing the proportion of eight broad land cover classes per pixel and is available for 2001, 2006 and 2011). NLCD was also the source for the tree canopy cover (2001, 2011), and imperviousness (2001, 2006, 2011) layers.
Socioeconomic variables were derived from the decennial census survey and American Community Survey (ACS) at the ZIP code level. Given differences in the area of ZIP codes, we expressed socioeconomic data relative to the ZIP code area to facilitate comparison.
