To understand the effect of sugar concentration on
diversity of garden birds and the abundance of nectarivorous species at sugar water feeders in urban areas, we recruited 17 volunteer gardens with no previous feeding history in
Auckland, New Zealand. We installed Tui Nectar Feeders™ and randomly assigned either 10 or 20% sugar
concentration to each garden. Then we conducted a series of early morning 5-minutes bird counts prior and after feeder installation in gardens with both low and high sugar concentrations. This dataset is the summary of all the bird counts from these experimental gardens conducted in 2019 and 2020.
