Significance of Between-Term Preferences

Results addressing the statistical significance of preferences between terms among participants with any of the 8 roles used in the academic write-up of the terminology survey results:

  1. Single-role nonspeaking AAC users
  2. Single-role speaking AAC users
  3. Single-role relatives of AAC users
  4. Single-role AAC professionals
  5. AAC users who are also relatives of AAC users
  6. AAC users who are also AAC professionals
  7. Relatives of AAC users who are also AAC professionals
  8. Others

The 5 possible responses were: "What's that?" (Unfamiliar), "I don't like it" (Dislike), "It's OK" (OK), "I like it" (Like) and "I use it" (Use). Participants could select multiple options for a term or leave a term blank.


Each file in this item addresses either differences between terms in like or use or differences between terms in dislike. Each file covers all 8 roles. Each item covers one group of terms:

  1. Table 1 terms: Terms to describe people who use or could benefit from AAC.
  2. Table 2 terms: Terms to describe sometimes or always not speaking.
  3. Table 3 terms: Terms for communication disabilities.
  4. Table 4 terms: Terms for people.
  5. Table 5 terms: Terms related to providing communication & AAC supports.
  6. Table 6 terms: Terms for AAC devices.
  7. Table 7 terms: Terms for spoken words or spoken language.
  8. Table 8 terms: Terms for AAC speech.
