This article refers to the relation of journals with data; not because science is dealing with data for the first time, but for two main reasons: a) the amount of data that scientists are able to manage has increased hugely recently and b) the pressure for transparency and economic efficiency of budgets public. We present the compilation and analysis of data journals identified with the following objectives: to determine its origin, their evolution and their distinctive features. In conclusion, the aim is to identify the role Data Journals can play in the ecosystem of scientific communication.
