Two festivals for the encouragement of New Zealand music were held in 1916 and 1918. This paper looks as the establishment of the festivals by Arthur Lilly and some of the lesser known composers including Alice Forrester, Robert Horne, Mai Burnes-Loughnan and Katherine Foster.
