This chapter examines cerebral arts and forms of leisure - such as visiting museums and art galleries, reading, and undertaking amateur art and craft hobbies - during the nineteenth century. It notes the commercialisation and democratisation of these forms of leisure during the period, and their increasing use to demarcate class, gender and other groupings.
