Some approaches to large-scale manufacturing of liposomes
Liposomes are nowadays one of the principal nanotechnologies in medical research. They are made of materials that highly resemble those present in mammalian biological membranes, and hence they are safe, biocompatible and biodegradable bilayer vesicles. Although many liposome products have been already commercialized, the difficulty of manufacturing liposomes on a large scale is an obstacle to development and commercialization of many liposome formulations. This review of the literature discusses formulation of liposomes with a focus on proliposome technologies, considering their current applications and future potential in large-scale manufacturing of liposomes. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.
