This is a Code of Conduct for building learning communities. It is made available as an example template for supporting ways of interacting which promotes learning of all participants. This guide was originally developed as an online and printed handout for the first Waterhackweek, a five-day collaborative event for freshwater-related data science, was held at the University of Washington (UW) in partnership with the eScience Institute and the UW Freshwater Initiative Mar. 25 – 29, 2019. The event received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) CyberTraining Program.

Motivation: As of February 25, 2019 there were
Significant Changes and Clarifications to the Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/pappg19_1/sigchanges.jsp Chapter II.E.7, Conferences, has been supplemented with new language that requires conference proposers to have a policy or code-of-conduct that addresses sexual harassment, other forms of harassment, or sexual assault, and that includes clear and accessible means of reporting violations of the policy or code-of-conduct. This policy or code-of-conduct must be disseminated to conference participants prior to attendance at the conference as well as made available at the conference itself.

It is NSF policy that all personnel supported by NSF awards must comport themselves in a responsible and accountable manner during the award performance period at awardee institutions, field sites, facilities, conferences, workshops, online and everywhere NSF-funded science and education is conducted.

This Code of Conduct was made possible by the contribution fromf UW eScience Institute hackweek collaborators, Anthony Arendt and Catherine Kuhn, and the UW Office of Ombudsman, Prisca Youn.
