Background: Riparian area of Cikapundung River has experienced massive land-use conversion into buildings and agricultural fields. Those land-use conversion have affected the quality of the river’s aquatic ecosystem (Naiman et al., 2005). The quality of aquatic ecosystem of a river can be protected by good condition of riparian ecosystem which can be indicated by the presence of dense vegetation of local species and undisturbed soil (Castelle et al., 1994). This study describes the ecological characteristics of riparian area along the Cikapundung River located in West Java Province. The results of this study can be used for consideration for managing or restoring the riparian ecosystem of the Cikapundung River.

Aims:
This study aimed to describe the diversity and abundance of vegetation; identify the presence of invasive species; describe the soil (edaphic) condition; and determine the relationship between vegetation coverage and soil condition. The study was conducted on May 13-July 22, 2017 in the riparian area along the Cikapundung River. The river was divided into 100 segments. In each segment, vegetation measurement and soil sampling were conducted in two 5 m x 20 m plots located in each side of the river.

Conclusions:
Total species found were 335 species, both species richness and diversity index (H') of herbaceous plants are higher than shrubs and trees; total of vegetation coverage de- creased from upstream to downstream.
The presence of invasive species is about 7% (22 species) of total species found in riparian areas along Cikapundung River.
Soil conditions on along the riparian area of the river were the following: average pH about 6-7, decreased soil organic content and increased bulk density from upstream to downstream.
The relationship between vegetation cov- erage and soil condition varied with some parameters showed positive correlations, negative or no correlation with vegetation cover.
