Plot of 41 Pleiades distance estimates published between 1970 and 2014. Distances based upon astrometry from the Hipparcos mission are open squares, and all others are plotted as filled circles. Three notable recent distance estimates are pointed out: Two Hipparcos-based estimates by van Leeuwen & Hansen Ruiz (1997;
Proceedings of the ESA Symposium `Hipparcos - Venice '97', 402, 689) and van Leeuwen (2009; A&A, 497, 209) and one based on trigonometric parallaxes  measured using Hubble Space Telescope/FGS (Soderblom+ 2005, AJ, 129, 1616). The non-Hipparcos-based distances scattered near the median value (~133 pc) included values estimated via ground-based trigonometric parallaxes, binary modeling, modeling of stellar rotation data, main sequence fitting, and moving cluster method. Note that many older published distimate estimates did not have listed uncertainties.
