In her memoirs Ewa Felińska shows
the strong ties between neighbours within the Polish society of the 19th
century. They are reflected in the warm hospitality, the efforts of educating
the young generation, in organizing parties, celebrating religious holidays
together. Through these ties a profound sense of belonging and closeness is
born, moral and national values are expressed, friendships are created,
decisions about getting married are taken. Cooperation in the economic
dimension is much weaker, as it is dominated by rivalry and the aspiration for
self-sufficiency. The ties between neighbours concern primarily the gentry, but
to some extent they are also expressed in the sense of responsibility and
providing assistance to the peasants: helping the hungry, providing medical
care, enabling getting a profession and giving advice.
