This study focuses on BIBFRAME from the perspective of metadata conversion from MARC 21 to BIBFRAME 2.0. In the first part (chapters 1-4) the following topics are discussed: the MARC format and AACR2, the linked data principles and the semantic web, FRBR and RDA and the BIBFRAME model. In the second part (chapters 5-6) a practical approach is taken to study the following research
question: ’What are the implications of the implementation of BIBFRAME on an organisational and operational level?’. The organisational implications of such a change are discussed based on a literature review centred around change (management) in libraries. The discussion about the operational implications is based on the analysis of the transformation of two sets of bibliographic descriptions in
MARC XML stemming from two libraries: the National Library of Belgium or KBR and the university libraries of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. These records are transformed from MARC 21 into BIBFRAME 2.0 by means of the conversion tools made available by the Library of Congress. As the KBR uses an in-house version of MARC an additional transformation from KBR MARC to MARC 21 was necessary which was achieved by means of scripts programmed in Python.
