Flow-Induced Vibration of a Circular Cylinder Undergoing Rotary Motions

The phenomenon of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in fluids has potentially fatal consequences as the vibrations may cause structural failures in engineering structures such as long, slender oil riser tubes. Using an elastically-mounted cylinder as a test model, the effects of two active VIV control methods were studied. The first method involves rotating the cylinder at a constant speed and the second method involves rotary oscillating the cylinder. Results from this research showed that the studied VIV control methods can alter the known dynamic response and wake structure of a cylinder undergoing VIV. Under certain conditions, VIV is effectively suppressed.
