Under anaerobic conditions, pyruvate is degraded to formic acid (formate), which is either expelled (via transporters), or further degraded into Hand CO. The reactions for these processes were up-regulated whereas the biosynthesis and degradation of costly compounds were down-regulated (folate and 10-formyl-THF, respectively).
