Among these applications there are multiple correlations, including the fundamental role played in them by the visual dimension. Starting from the Marxist conception of commodity fetishism, Benjamin comes to emphasize this dimension through the notion of phantasmagoria, which refers to the most visible and exuberant aspects of commodity, their subjective impact and their spreading to other spheres of existence. Thus, he takes account of spectacular facets of the consumer world already detectable in the 19th century and anticipates further theoretical developments, represented, for example, by Debord, Haug, and Baudrillard.
