Data from:

Cooper N. & Purvis A. (2009). What factors shape rates of phenotypic evolution? A comparative study in four mammalian clades. Journal of Evolutionary Biology, 22, 1024-1035.

Variable descriptions:

Clade. B = Phyllostomidae; M = Platyrrhini; P = Phalangeriformes; S = Xerinae.

MSW93_Binomial. Binomial (Wilson and Reeder 1993 taxonomy)

rate.estimate. Rate of morphological evolution. See manuscript for details.

AdultBodyMass_g. Adult body mass (g)

BMR_mass.specific. Mass specific basal metabolic rate (LO2/g/hr)

PopulationDensity_n.km2. Population density (individuals/km2)

GestationLen_d. Gestation length (days)

MaxLongevity_m. Maximimum lifespan (months)

Temp_Mean_01degC. Mean annual temperature across range (0.1 oC)

GR_Area_km2. Gegoraphic range size (km2)

Generalisation. Habitat breadth multiplied by diet breadth. Habitat breadth is the number of WWF biomes (Olson et al., 2001) within which the species occurred, and diet breadth was the number of different food types eaten (from vertebrates/invertebrates/fruit/flowers, nectar and pollen/seeds/grass/leaves, branches and bark/roots and tubers: PanTHERIA).

avg.competitors_01deggrid. Mean number of potential competitors (defined as species within the same clade and the same macroniche; Eisenberg, 1981) per 1° grid cell across the species’ geographic range.
