ASSESSING SPEAKING FOR ACHIEVING COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE THROUGH “DISTRESS CALL AT SEA” TEST AT THE NUSANTARA MARITIME ACADEMY

This study attempts to identify (1) the accuracy and the fluency of the students in speaking Distress Call at Sea and (2) do the students have a communicative competence based on the test result. The writer found that the students have an average skill on accuracy and fluency. He also found some misspell in some words. According to the test result, it can be said that the students may have a communicative competence or not depends on Bachmann’s or Hymes’ theory.
