Data was collected on September 24, 2014 at a grassland on the York University Keele Campus. The species Cnicus vulgare (or the Common Thistle) was observed on a single transect line in the grassland. The transect line was placed randomly in the grassland and a person walked along the line to observe the abundance of plant species, and to identify the chosen species. The sample size was 20 individuals. Every objective plant spotted was numbered off randomly and observed in its position on the transect line, and its traits were recorded. These traits include the height of the plant in centimeters, the position or distance within the 20 meters of the transect line, the number of flowers which could be observed, the number of leaves which could be observed, and the level of crowding. These steps were repeated 20 times for each individual plant that was observed, and the data was recorded.
