These data were collected during the summer of 2017 in Jianfengling, Hainan Island, China. Juvenile tropical trees were sampled for leaves and root systems. Leaves and root systems were scanned, dried and weighed, and morphological traits were quantified with WinFolia (for leaves) and WinRhizo (for roots). About 1 kg of surface soil was collected from the area where root systems were excavated and collected. The soil samples (300 in total) were sieved and sent for laboratory analysis by the Guangzhou Xinhua Agricultural Limited Company in Guangzhou, China.

Plant functional trait and abiotiic soil chemistry data are provided in three separate files, one for leaf traits (CHINAROOTS_Leaf Traits.csv), one for root traits (CHINAROOTS_Root Traits.csv) and one including soils data (soil300.csv). Please see: Figshare_metadata.txt for complete variables descriptions for each datafile.
