This is the Ph.D. thesis of Peter Bandettini. It was written and defended in 1994, and covers early work on a wide range of areas in functional MRI. These areas include: pulse sequences, hardware, simulations, measures of temporal and spatial limits, field strength effects, effects of echo time, hypercapnia and hypoxia stresses, and finally some applications.
